Free consultation

I offer a free online or phone consultation of up to half an hour. This gives me the opportunity to understand what you would like to achieve, for you to tell me what you already know, and  for us to consider a possible plan for a way forward.

My proposal

Under normal circumstances, I will aim to be in email contact within two weeks to confirm details of the proposed work, and to provide an itemised quotation for the work requested. You are, of course, completely free to accept or decline the proposal. Quotations remain valid for 30 days.

Paid research

If you would like me to carry out research for you, my hourly rate is from £25. Accurate estimation of costs for smaller projects tends to be relatively straightforward. For larger projects, I prefer to break down the research into blocks of time, such as 4 hours, 8 hours etc. This ensures you remain fully in charge of the project. The work is paid for in instalments, with a short interim report provided at the end of each period of work. A full final report will be issued at the end of the project.

Online consultations

If you would like to take a ‘do-it-yourself’ approach and learn the skills and enjoyment of doing your own family history research, online consultations may be right for you. The rate for these is £50 per consultation. This includes:

• Preparation time for me to plan an interesting and relevant online session with you, geared to your personal family history research.

• a consultation of 40 minutes via Zoom or Google Meet, with a follow-up email summary of our session.

If you decide to proceed

I will ask you to formally accept the quotation and terms of conditions. Please note point 5.2 in my terms and conditions—there is no point in you paying me to find  information you have already, unless you would like me to check it.

For paid research

In common with other researchers, a deposit of 50% of the research cost becomes due. On receipt of this, we can share relevant family history documentation and agree a start date.

Once research is complete and the final cost is settled, you will receive a full, clearly-written report, detailing the research undertaken, sources used, findings and analysis. If relevant, I will provide details of future research possibilities.

For online consultations

Payment for an online consultation is made at the time of booking. A series of consultations may be booked, building in research time for yourself in the interim.

No report is produced for online consultations, but you will receive email summaries of our sessions.
